The prime minister said that only 127 foreign fuel truck drivers applied for temporary visas to address shortages.

In an effort to prevent other supply chain problems, the government offers another 4,700 temporary visas to foreign food truck drivers. These will be available from October through February. This scheme is still being applied for by a few people.
The prime minister spoke on BBC Breakfast and said that working in road haulage was “a wonderful job”, while pointing out the lack of investment in infrastructure and poor pay conditions.
The problem did not stem from Brexit. He noted that the supply chain problem can be linked to recovery and suggested other areas of the globe were affected.
He stated, “Imagine the UK in deep freeze. The pipes are frozen right now. Stresses and strain of the economy are rising up.”
According to trade bodies, the UK is currently experiencing a shortage in HGV drivers of around 90,000. This could be due to a variety of factors including Brexit, the coronavirus pandemic and an ageing workforce.
Supply chains have been affected by the shortages in recent months. There are some problems with certain products at supermarkets, while others face difficulties stocking enough fuel for customers.
According to the Petrol Retailers Association, (PRA), although supplies were down in certain areas recently due to fuel shortages, panic bought at the pumps.
Around 200 soldiers from both the Army and RAF were drafted to transport fuel from forecourts to depots.
PRA reported that one-fifth of London’s forecourts remained unassisted on Monday.
Foreign drivers can now work in the UK under the government’s unique scheme.
Although visas are not available to all foreign drivers, the majority of drivers from Europe will qualify for them.
Temporary visas cannot be used for long-term solutions, so the government is encouraging firms to make investments in the UK.
Johnson stated that the UK’s economy cannot “return to the failed model in which you maintain low-wage and low-skilled labor”.
