Sri Lankan attacks: 23,000 accusations against suspects brought to trial

Following the attacks of Easter bombers on April 19, 2021 it has taken over two years for the trial to commence.

Twenty-five men are being tried for their involvement in the Sri Lankan Easter Bombings 2019.

Bombings targeted three hotels, and three churches. 267 victims were killed and 500 others were hurt.

Over 23,000 cases have been brought against these suspects and more than 1,215 witnesses were called to testify.

The suspect’s attorneys have however questioned the validity of this many witnesses and charges, calling it “a futile exercise.”

The suspects were charged with conspiring to kill, aiding in abetting attacks and gathering arms and ammunition.

Eight suicide bombers were killed in the Easter Sunday explosions.

But their relatives and friends are being accused of planning and masterminding these terrorist attacks.

The father of two suicide bombers and another Sri Lankan national are among them.

A number of witnesses and charges were cited by lawyers in the case. This could lead to a prolonged trial that could last years.

Noordeen Shaheed (defense attorney) represented six of the indicted and said that it was “a futile exercise.” [as]You won’t get any results from it.”

All 25 suspects have been charged with 23,000 offenses. He said that it was very rare and possibly historical as far as Sri Lanka’s history is concerned.” Reuters TV.

Public criticism has been levelled at the trial by the families of victims as well as the minority Christian community. They accuse government officials of not taking swift action to punish those responsible.

Three churches were attacked and three hotels with five stars suffered a string attack on Sunday, April 21st 2019. The attacks left at least 45 people dead, including at least 45 from abroad.

About 500 victims were also hurt in the attacks, many of them from Sri Lanka’s Christian minority.
